Our adult program is comprised of a variety of martial arts, but the core disciplines include TaeKwon-Do and Brazilian Jiu JItsu (BJJ). Our classes place an emphasis on BJJ due to the fact that most attacks end up on the ground. Although attacks on the street are unpredictable, this class combines techniques which will give the student the tools needed to defend themselves both on the ground and from the standing position. At the same time, it is a cardio intensive class designed to build fitness and conditioning.
What is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ)?
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a martial art developed by the Gracie family originally designed for a smaller person to be able to defeat a larger and stronger opponent using leverage and technique, not strength. Statistics show that 95% of all attacks end up on the ground. BJJ will give you the tools to defend yourself on the ground. You will learn how to use balance, leverage and technique to gain a dominant position on the ground, which will give you the opportunity to subdue or submit your opponent and increase your chances of surviving an attack. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu translated means ”the gentle art.” Succeeding in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is about out-thinking an opponent with technique, not out-brawling.
What is training like at our academy?
At the Livermore Martial Arts Academy, we train our students for self defense. Some of our students do compete in tournaments, but it is not required. Our training is done in a safe, friendly and controlled environment. Egos are left at the door.
